Research Question?????????? Continued

I want to learn about the white oppression of the blacks during the 1960's and 1970's because I am interested in learning more about why the blacks were so successful in some of their protest and unsuccessful in others in order to help the reader understand how perseverance and successful protest can change the minds of millions.

Why were some methods of fighting segregation more successful than others...

Because I want to find out what the thought process of the whites was...
Because I want to find out how successful and unsuccessful the blacks were...

HMWK

One time I knew something was wrong and I did not tell was when someone, not going to name names, was playing a computer game during class. I felt that this was not a crime that someone should be punished for so I did not turn them in. In addition, because I am also guilty of this at times so by turning them in, they might possible turn me in at some other point. Also, by playing the game in class they are only hurting their own understanding of the material that we are learning. If the teacher where to have catch wind that we were playing the games in class, I felt that the punishment would not be serious. So by turning this person in I do not gain anything, but instead could possibly loss a friendship. This event has happened various times during different classes. Although this moment is not of great significance it can relate to many reasons that someone would not tell on a person even if they knew something was wrong. They might risk losing a friendship or because they commit the act themselves would get punished as well.

Nazi Germany Pictures

German men and women smiling and laughing only a few blocks outside of Auschwitz
On a bridge near a forest possibly
Dressed in uniform
Music playing

German men and women taking a lunch break, after a long morning killing Jews. They have decided to bring some music along to make the event more eventful. They have discussed the morning activities and have begun to make plans for the afternoon's experiments on Jews. In addition, because they know of the impending doom as the allies powers approached they decided to take one last fun photo before returning to their experiments.

Why are they on the bridge in the middle of the day?
Why are they playing music and having a fun time when 'evil' experiments are going on just a few blocks away?
How could they behaving such a good time while inhuman acts were going on?
What did the Germans find so funny, was it the killing that they had just committed or did someone tell a really good joke?

Class Events

I have had a change of heart after reading this article. I had always believed that in these sweatshops that people were forced to work long hours with little pay and in harsh conditions. However, I never realized that for these people these sweatshops proved a way to live. It provides them with money to live and buy food for their families. I found that it was very interesting that the people wanted more hours of work and be requires to work more days because they wanted to earn as much money as possible. In the US we tend to not work as hard because more things in this country are given to us. However, in these countries that have sweatshops the people work harder and for longer periods of time, all in an effort to make more money for their families.

Would sweatshops help end unemployment in the US?
Do sweatshops violate article 23?

Congo News Article

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/04/world/africa/04congo.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&ref=congothedemocraticrepublicof

Recently, the women of the Congo have faced the constant threat of being raped. People are blaming the UN for these constant threats. For example, a women was raped in her home, while there was a UN camp just a couple of blocks away. Examples like this have happened all over the Congo and the UN has yet to show that they have any way of stopping it. The threats have caused the UN to take some action, but at the inconvenience of the Congolese. They have offered protection for travel. This protection is available for large groups and moves very slowly. This helps prevent the rebels from attack the group while they are traveling through jungle areas. While this event is not directly cause by King Leopold, it however shows how some of the soldiers might have treated the Congolese during Leopold's reign.

Why is the UN not doing more to try to help these women?
What prevents the UN from having the resources to make the rapes stop?

Small Group Reflection

How has Europe not discovered how Leopold is treating the people in the Congo and how he has gone against all the promises he made? And if he is discovered what are the ramifications of these actions?

I feel that we could have done a better job of staying on task. I think that sometimes we got a little side tracked either with a book that we should not have been discussion or other things that were not relevant to the conversation. However, I think we did a good job of having everyone talking and did the right about of citing. There was not to much citing that made it hard for the discussion to flow, but instead we used them to reinforce the point that was being made.

King Leopold pg. 1-32

As a person who knew nothing of the Conog massacure before reading this book, I was truly amazed to find out about this tradgic event. As mentioned in the book not many people know of the horrifying event and its crazy to think that an event that rivaled the Holocaust in total deaths is not widely known. In addition, the Europeans obsession with power and greed is astonishing. They took people from their homes in Africa and sold them for thier own profit. They killed thousands of Africans en-route to their new slave home, and for the ones who arrived alive, a life of hard work and no freedom lay a head. All most all of these slaves will never agian see their home and the Europeans think nothing of this. Finally, the attempt of John Rowlands to seperate himself from his past was interesting. He changed his name, made up stories, and lied about things that had happened all in an attempt to forget about his troubled past. It creates many questions in the mind of the reader about why he cannot deal with his past.

1. If people say that your past is who you are then why does John Rowlands want to seperate himself from his past?

2. Why is the Congo Massacure not widely known?

Imperialism

I learned how large of an impact the Europeans had on the World during the end of the 19th century. They acted as a super power and divided the world up like they were God. People suggested reasons why it was humanitarian, but it was all a power struggle. They exhibited greed, and domination.

Current Events Practic

  1. What's being discussed in this article?
The one-child policy that is implemented in China at this time. This policy allows each family to have only one child. If the family has more than one child they may endure large fines and possible loss of property. In addition, throughout the pregnancy they will be encouraged to have an abortion. The act has been in place for 30 years and was said to becoming to an end by 2015, however, many believe that this policy may continue throughout the years.

  2. When did the event happen? (Is this breaking news or something that's been analyzed and discussed for a while?)
This is an event that has been discussed for a long time. However, the news of this family struggles is new to this topic, thus making it a breaking news story. In addition, this topic is a currant debate topic.

  3. What questions do you have that would help make this article make more sense to you? What more do you need to learn about to be able to report on this event?
There are no questions that I have about this article. And in order to know more about this topic I would need to know if there were any other reasons that this law was implemented other than to decrease the population.

September 11, 2001: I remember watching the BMW Championship at Bellerive, and my dad telling me that my mother would not be flying that day because a plan had crashed.  At the time I did not know the significance.

Hurricane Katrina: I remember hearing about the possible hurricane on the news and then seeing pictures of the damage that it cause on the internet.  I thought that it would take a while to recover from this event.

Gulf Coast Oil Spill: I remember looking on the internet and seeing that there was a recent enviormental problem in the Gulf Coast.  I thought to my self that this could not be happening again.

Parents:
JFK assassination: My mother was four years old and she remembers coming home and seeing her mother crying.  Then the next day not having any school.

Berlin wall being taken down: My mother remembers watching this event on TV in her home in California and thinking that people were getting to see and talk to people that they never were able to see and talk before.

Challenger explosion: My mother remembers working her first corporate job on a college campus in New Hampshire and how after the accident the entire campus went quiet.
